Happy Valley residents who were ordered to evacuate last week by the Shasta County Bomb Squad should be ready to clear out again Monday for what should be the final disposal of a large amount of unstable explosives. Last Monday Redding Police Investigators following a lead from burglary and explosives cases within the city discovered the plethora of plastic explosives, detonators and hundreds of pounds of TNT stashed in an old barn off of Happy Valley Road. On Tuesday everyone within a half-mile was evacuated, including Happy Valley Elementary School. About 150 pounds of the material was carried by the bomb squad to a different location and blown up, but another 200 pounds or so is considered too unstable to risk the move. Dynamite becomes more unstable with age, and these materials are believed to be from the 1950’s and 60’s. On Saturday the bomb squad blew up some more explosives that can’t be destroyed by fire. Monday at around Noon the rest of the materials will be set on fire. All the previous evacuees will be cleared out starting at 8 O’clock Monday morning and all Happy Valley schools will have the day off. Happy Valley Road will be closed from Palm Avenue to Andrea Way. Everything will open up again when the bomb squad says it’s safe.
