An aquifer as large as Shasta Lake sits under the City of Redding, with over six million acre feet of water feeding 17 wells. That large basin also serves five other agencies that will soon be forming a state mandated groundwater sustainability agency. Governor Jerry Brown has mandated that the State Water Resources Control Board require agencies that sit over groundwater basins come up with a plan to ensure the sustainability of each aquifer. Public Works Director Brian Crane told the Redding City Council that currently there is no one overseeing the management of the water in the aquifer, especially in big agricultural areas to the south of us. While the agency is being formed each local district is asking questions about how much local control they will still have. But Crane says if a plan isn’t put together by next year the state will put together its own plan to manage the water and will charge the local agencies a fee to do so.
