Highway 299 Remains Blocked By Rock Slide

Highway 299 in Trinity County will remain closed for at least another night. The highway is completely blocked by a rock slide at Big French Creek near Big Bar. One-way traffic control had been in effect for months at a location where a persistent slide has had one lane blocked. That slide has gotten much more active and crews have been unable to clear the material fast enough as it continues to slide down the mountain. Drivers to and from the coast are encouraged by Cal-Trans to use Highway 3 or 36, though they’re both such a long way around they can’t really be called detours. There is no estimated time for the re-opening of Highway 299. Cal-Trans video footage of the slide can be seen on our Facebook page.
