Crews Working To Remove Slide From Highway 299

Cal-Trans is going to get tough with a rock slide in Trinity County, but it’ll mean the closure of Highway 299 for a week. The highway is completely blocked by a rock slide at Big French Creek near Big Bar. One-way traffic control had been in effect for months at a location where a persistent slide has had one lane blocked. That slide has gotten much more active and crews have been unable to clear the material fast enough as it continues to slide down the mountain. Contractor Steve Manning Construction is focusing on a large section of rock that will require excavation with mechanical equipment and possible blasting. Crews are hoping to have enough of the material moved to allow traffic through by next Wednesday for Thanksgiving travelers. Drivers to and from the coast are encouraged by Cal-Trans to use Highway 3 or 36. Cal-Trans video footage of the slide can be seen on our Facebook page.
