A Happy Camp man whose body was found in the Klamath River after a lengthy search was apparently murdered, and the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest. On April 14th the family of 42-year-old Benjamin Camarena reported him missing, saying he had been riding his horse on Indian Creek Road, but the horse came home with an empty saddle. A short time earlier a few witnesses, including a sheriff’s deputy, saw a dead body floating down Indian Creek and into the Klamath River. Over the course of three weeks, the entire river all the way to the ocean was searched by the Siskiyou, Del Norte and Humboldt County Sheriff’s Offices, the Coast Guard, the National Guard and the Karuk, Hoopa and Yurok Tribes. Last Thursday Camerena’s body was found in the river by search and rescue. Camarena’s death was treated as a homicide from the outset, and a number of interviews have been conducted, leading to Tuesday’s arrest of 24-year-old Dakota Michael Bearquiver. He was heavily armed at a Happy Camp property where there were a number of innocent people, including an infant. Because of those factors, a small army of deputies participated in the capture of Bearquiver.
