A program designed to help veterans with their health care is being used by scam artists to rob them blind. The Veterans Choice Program is a V.A. initiative that allows some eligible veterans to use certain health care providers that are outside the V.A. system. There’s a toll free number to verify eligibility, but fraudsters have established telephone numbers that are very similar, and they use names, seals and logos very similar to legitimate organizations. When an unwitting person calls one of the fake numbers, they’re questioned until they provide enough personal information to be ripped off. The real number for the veterans choice program is 866-606-8198.
