The man who started the devastating Clover Fire almost 4 years ago has been given the maximum allowable sentence for the plea deal he made. 32-year-old Zane Peterson of Happy Valley pleaded guilty last September to 22 felony counts from a series of arson fires he started over the course of 3 months. By far the worst was the Clover Fire. It started September 9th of 2013 and ripped through more than 8-Thousand acres in a matter of hours, destroying 68 homes, and causing the death of 55-year-old Brian Henry. The total monetary damage was estimated at over 65 Million Dollars. A surveillance camera showed Peterson driving his pickup on Cloverdale Road one minute before the fire started. Another camera showed him on Clear Creek Road at Honeybee Lane 2 minutes later. Peterson kept starting more fires after the Clover Fire. What he didn’t know is that a GPS tracking device had been placed on his pickup, and another one was later placed on his car. That’s how Peterson was implicated in four other fires. Following a 2 day sentencing hearing, Peterson has been given a term of 44 years, and he must serve at least 85% before being eligible for parole.
