More details have been released about a contractors licensing sting we reported on last week in the City of Shasta Lake. The District Attorney’s Office joined with the Contractors State License Board on June 14th as they set up in a house near Central Valley High School and invited bids on various home improvement jobs, including landscaping, fencing, painting, flooring and tile. Bids ranged from $1000 to $9000. By California Law, any job totaling more than $500, including materials, requires a license.  Eleven citations were issued to those who showed up for offering their unlicensed services, as well as for advertising by an unlicensed person and failure to secure workers compensation insurance. One of the suspects, Ronny Martin, has been the subject of consumer complaints to the D.A.’s Office that he took down payments for jobs he never did. At the sting he reportedly bid $3600 for a backyard sod replacement job and wanted all the money up front. Even with a license, a down payment cannot exceed $1000 or 10% of the contract amount, whichever is less. The next day the team visited 37 job sites in Redding. Almost all of them were in compliance but two stop orders were made and citations issued, one for unlicensed contracting and the other for workers’ comp violations.
