Teen Allegedly Attacks Homeless Man

A teenager is accused of a violent attack on a homeless man. At around 3:30PM Wednesday afternoon the victim approached some people in a Toyota Celica in the parking lot by McDonald’s on Lake Boulevard and asked them for money. The driver got out and attacked the man, knocking him to the ground and continuing to beat him, then taking his wallet from his pocket and emptying it. The attacker tried to pull the man’s backpack off of his back with such force that he dislocated the victim’s shoulder. Witnesses stepped in to intervene and the suspects fled in the Toyota. The license plate provided by witnesses led to an address at the Pepper Tree Apartments off Hilltop Drive. Officers surrounded the building with a CHP helicopter overhead and 19-year-old Joseph Ryan surrendered. A 17-year-old boy also voluntarily came forward. Both were identified by the victim. A search of Ryan’s apartment allegedly turned up a sawed-off shotgun and two handguns that had been stolen in Redding burglaries. Ryan was booked into jail and the 17-year-old into juvenile hall.
