Boating Accident on Lake Shasta Kills 12-year-old Boy

A child was reportedly driving a boat that hit another child and caused a drowning on Lake Shasta. At around 8 o’clock Monday night Shasta County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to the area near Digger Bay. They were told that a young skier had been struck by a boat. Boating Safety Deputies arrested 50-year-old Robert Noftz of Red Bluff for boating under the influence, even though he was not driving. A juvenile girl was driving the boat and because she’s under the age of 16, Noftz was the legally supervising adult. A 12-year-old boy was being pulled on a tube, with the girl and 3 other kids in the boat. Noftz reportedly told the girl to try and knock the boy off the tube. She turned the boat sharply and the boat hit its own wake, effectively making a u-turn and heading straight back to the boy on the tube. He jumped from the tube trying to get out of the way but he went under the bow and disappeared. His life vest surfaced with damage from the propeller, but the boy was gone. The Sheriff’s Dive Team has been searching for the boy.
