The two bighorn sheep sculptures destroyed by vandals south of Redding may be reincarnated thanks to a fund established by the Redding Civic Auditorium. It’s called the “Sellouts Serve the Community” program. When a show sells out at the Civic, a portion of the proceeds gets donated to a local cause, with past recipients including Kid’s Kingdom, Project Healing Waters and Riverfront Playhouse. Last week the rock band KoRn had a sold-out show at the Civic and three days later unknown suspects trashed the sculptures. Named “Wilbur and Lester”, the plywood sculptures have made appearances at Coachella and other music festivals. $1000 has been donated by the Civic Auditorium to be used to right the wrong done to Wilbur and Lester. The result won’t necessarily be bighorn sheep. The man who leases the Riverland Drive property where the vandalism took place is discussing with the artist how best to salvage or reimagine the remains of the artwork. The sculptures had already been ordered removed by the county because they were placed there without a permit, and plans to move them had been in the works.
