Group To Unveil Signage To Commemorate “Old 99”

Every now and then a number of longtime Redding residents can still be heard making reference to “Old 99”, usually meaning various stretches of Market Street and Highway 273. Other local roads that used be parts of U.S. Route 99 include Holiday Road and Wonderland Boulevard, both in Mountain Gate. From the time the first vehicular roads were established in the early 20th century, 99 was the main north-south corridor for the west coast.  The construction of Interstate Five in 1964 paved right over the top of most of 99, but some pieces remain with their signature 20’s style bridge architecture and other features. The Mountain Gate Auxiliary Board has raised enough funds to erect some signs pointing out their surviving stretches of transportation history. They’ll be unveiled at Fawndale and Wonderland on Monday at 10AM.
