A man on Lake Shasta fell off the back of a boat and was injured by the propeller Wednesday. Just before Noon, 40-year-old Benjamin Duncan of Redding was a passenger on a small aluminum fishing boat being driven by Marcy Bertolucci. There was a lot of boat traffic on the lake for the 4th of July and, combined with the winds, that made for choppy conditions on the water. As the boat was traveling out of the Jones Valley Inlet, it hit a series of waves that was so disruptive, both men were thrown from the boat into the water. Neither of them was wearing a life jacket and Duncan came into contact with the propeller of the outboard motor. They were both able to get themselves back into the boat and they were towed by another boater back to Jones Valley Marina, where they were met by an ambulance. Sheriff’s Office Boating Safety Deputies determined that Duncan had been drinking, but they don’t believe that was a factor in the accident. All boats must have life jackets for each person on board, and Bertolucci’s boat apparently did not.
