Update: Man Killed In Crash After Shootout With Deputies

The Tehama County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the man who exchanged gunfire with a deputy before being killed in a crash while fleeing. At around 7:30PM Saturday evening the deputy was checking out a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of the Dollar General Store in Los Molinos. About 5 minutes into the conversation, the driver of the Honda, identified as 29-year-old Jose Alfredo Barajas of Stockton, armed himself and got into a brief shootout with the deputy. Officials had initially said he was a man from Richfield, but that apparently wasn’t the case. Barajas struck the deputy, as well as a woman who was accompanying the deputy on a ride-along. They were hospitalized and are expected to make a full recovery. Meanwhile, Barajas fled at high speed northbound on Highway 99. Other officers soon spotted the car speeding through Red Bluff and they tried to overtake it as it headed north on Interstate 5. They were unable to catch up to the Honda until it crashed in the Hooker Creek Area, killing Barajas.
