Newsom Announces Nominee For California Utility Regulator

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – California Gov. Gavin Newsom has nominated a commissioner to the Public Utilities Commission and candidates for several other energy-related posts. Newsom on Tuesday selected Genevieve Shiroma for the PUC, which regulates electric, natural gas, water and telecommunications services. That includes Pacific Gas & Electric, which is planning to file for bankruptcy. Shiroma has held several state and local energy roles. Her appointment requires state Senate confirmation. Newsom also nominated three people to a five-member panel tasked with studying how to distribute costs related to wildfires. The nominees are former state insurance commissioner Dave Jones; ex-PUC member Carla Peterman and Michael Kahn, a former chair of the California Independent System Operator. That’s the agency that oversees the state’s power grid. All of Newsom’s nominees are Democrats.
