RPD Planning DUI Checkpoint Thursday Evening

Working with a state grant, Redding Police will send the message that “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze” as they conduct a sobriety checkpoint Thursday night. Collisions involving drug impaired driving have increased tremendously in recent years. The penalty for drugged driving is the same as drunk driving, with jail time and expenses that can easily exceed $10,000. Officers will screen for drunk drivers, as well as those impaired by prescription drugs and marijuana. Studies have shown that 30% of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their system. Combining drugs and alcohol can greatly intensify the effects of impairment. Officers will also be checking for valid drivers licenses. The checkpoint is set for Thursday evening between 6PM and 11PM somewhere within Redding city limits.
