The announcement by Victor Youth Services that they would be ceasing operations in the Redding area next month has many people wondering what’s going to happen to all the children currently under the wing of that organization. In addition to the residential group homes in the area, Victor also runs North Valley School on Canyon Road just south of Redding. The Shasta County Office of Education says they’re working with victor and other agencies to develop appropriate transition and placement for the students before the January 17th deadline. The trouble is that public schools may not welcome some of the troubled youths with open arms, as many of them are on probation and have serious behavioral issues that are beyond the scope of many schools. And that’s just the educational aspect. Beyond that, there are serious questions about where the youths might reside now that the residential facilities are closing. Shasta County Chief Probation Officer Tracy Neil says her department only has one juvenile placed with Victor,saying the vast majority are from other counties. Victor says the closures will affect 60 children and 90 employees.
