A Cottonwood man has been sentenced for using a large flashlight to assault a family making early morning newspaper deliveries during a fight that was sparked by a rude hand gesture. In May of 2017 a married couple and their adult son were delivering the Record Searchlight in the early morning hours. For several weeks they had been accused of stealing mail by Jason Wicks and his son Jeffery, of the “Cottonwood Community Watch”. Early one morning, the family was in front of a Main Street gas station sorting their papers before delivery, and the Wicks were parked nearby along with 70-year-old Carrolyn Barlow, who was named the Cottonwood “Citizen of the Year” in 2016. The fight did not involve Barlow, who remained in the car, but she was convicted in September of misdemeanor assault and sentenced in October to 60 days in jail and 3 years informal probation. Jason Wicks was found guilty on two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of assault likely to cause great bodily injury. He was sentenced Wednesday to a year in jail and two years probation. His son Jeffrey was cleared of all charges.
