A Shasta County judge called a young Redding mother a champion Thursday for standing up and seeking help to stop the ongoing abuse inflicted upon her and, more importantly, her baby. 28-year-old Scott Meigs was arrested June 3rd after his girlfriend brought the severely injured infant to Mercy Hospital. The baby was only 10-weeks-old and showed signs of abuse that included multiple fractures inflicted at different times, including a fractured skull. The woman told investigators that she had been assaulted by Meigs many times, including numerous strangulations. She at first refused to say that Meigs had also frequently abused the baby, but when she was told how serious the injuries were, she broke down and said it was true. When confronted by RPD investigators, Meigs confessed to strangling and assaulting his girlfriend repeatedly, and also abusing the infant multiple times, saying his frustration with the crying child caused him to be aggressive. After hours of gathering evidence, police arrested Meigs on multiple felony charges. Meigs met the $50,000 bail and was released 22 hours after his first arrest. More medical scans showed 15 total fractures, including many in various stages of healing, as well as abusive head trauma. That allowed the filing of more charges, including torture, and Meigs was re-arrested two days later with bail raised to $550,000. In October Meigs entered guilty pleas to 5 separate strikes, including attempted murder, mayhem, 3 counts of child abuse with great bodily injury, and domestic violence. Thursday he was sentenced to more than 20 years in state prison.
