Man Will Stand Trial For Fatal Wreck In October

A preliminary hearing was held Thursday for man who reportedly crashed during a chase of a stolen car, killing a passenger. On October 2nd Anderson Police chased a stolen Honda Civic south on Highway 273 into the Shasta Gateway Center, where the driver made a few rounds before heading south on Interstate Five. At the Main Street Exit to Cottonwood, the driver abruptly shot over from the fast lane and lost control, sending the Honda over the embankment. It landed upside down, killing 21-year-old Ethan George Purdy of Redding. The alleged driver, 28-year-old Derreck Gary Tope, and a female passenger were treated and released from the hospital. On Thursday Tope was ordered to stand trial on charges including second degree murder. He will be arraigned January 2nd. At the time of his arrest, Tope was wanted in four other stolen vehicle cases, and was already on formal probation for possession of a stolen vehicle.
