Siskiyou County Battles Illegal Cannibis

Siskiyou County Sheriff Jon Lopey claims that his department and other agencies working in the county dismantled an industry last year that could have been worth up to 600 million dollars. That’s according to the formula used by Lopey that presumes an average 3 pound yield per plant, sold for $3,000 a pound. The seizures of cannabis last year doubled those of the previous year, with a total of 61,600 growing plants and nearly 18,000 pounds of processed bud. That was the result of 154 search warrants that led to 17 arrests. There were at least three murders committed by apparent marijuana thieves last year in the county. The Siskiyou County board of supervisors voted Tuesday to extend their declaration of a local state of emergency in support of the cannabis eradication efforts of the Sheriff’s Department. Lopey says he’s gotten a “tentative commitment” from the federal DEA for additional funding.
