The Tehama County Sheriff’s Office has released some details about a double murder that was committed last Thursday night in the Richfield area north of Corning. The killings were done at around 8 O’clock in the dry bed of Thomes Creek near Highway 99-W. While deputies were en route on a report of shots fired, friends of 22-year-old Edgar Alejandro Villa Valencia arrived with him at Saint Elizabeth Hospital. Valencia had a gunshot wound to his torso and soon died. The Tehama County Major Crimes Unit started processing the murder scene at Thomes Creek and followed a trail of blood about 200 yards to find 20-year-old Juan Manuel Valencia Vargas, already dead. He also had been shot in the torso. The murder investigation continues.
While law enforcement was responding to the initial call, a deputy was southbound on Highway 99-W with his lights and siren blazing when a Wal-Mart tractor-trailer pulled out from Gyle Road northbound into his path. The interceptor struck the back of the trailer, then went off the road into a fence and a tree and caught fire. Bystanders extinguished the fire and extricated the deputy. He was transported to a hospital with minor injuries and released several hours later. The big rig driver continued on to the Wal-Mart Distribution Center, where the CHP tracked him down.
