Sheriff Johnson Launches War On Cannabis

As promised, new Shasta County Sheriff Michael Johnson wants to bring the hammer down on illegal cannabis cultivation. At a special meeting of the Board of Supervisors Tuesday afternoon the Sheriff is seeking to reestablish the Sheriff’s marijuana eradication budget through existing funds and future grant funding. The Eradication Team would be able to immediately start work with a $350,000 kick start from the general fund. Another item will seek to tighten administrative penalties for violations of cannabis prohibitions by imposing a $10,000 per day per violation fine that would be imposed without allowing for correction. That would be an urgency ordinance that goes into effect immediately. State law does not allow local jurisdictions to restrict the growing of six plants for personal use inside a person’s home, but Shasta County’s ordinance requires a zoning permit. A third item would go so far as to suppress the advertising of legal cannabis activity, such as billboards in unincorporated areas advertising legal cannabis shops within the city limits of Redding and Shasta Lake. tThe meeting begins at 4 o’clock.
