Man Assaulted After Interrupting Burglars

Two people were captured after reportedly assaulting a man who interrupted their burglary of a storage unit. Saturday morning 59-year-old Jeffery Sprague called police to say he had seen two suspicious-looking people on video surveillance at a storage facility on Pit Road in south Redding. When he got there he saw a man and woman quickly close the door to a vacant unit from the inside. When Sprague approached, they both ran out and struck him with a bag of items. Sprague tried to apprehend the woman but while he was struggling with her, the man hit him in the back with a baseball bat. The pair then fled in a U-Haul box truck. An RPD officer en route spotted a U-Haul truck and stopped it. Christina Burke and Jesse Talbot, both 32-years-old, were arrested. Officers reported finding heroin in the truck. Talbot is on probation and post release supervision. One of the units at the storage facility had been forced open, but police have been unable to contact the renter.
