A Cal-Trans worker has been recognized for a heroic act he did in Tehama County a few years ago. On July 25th of 2018 Cal-Trans Highway Maintenance Leadworker Royce Hiner was driving to a routine maintenance call when he came upon a van on fire along Interstate 5 near Corning. He stopped to help the driver, who was frantically trying to douse the fire. Hiner told the man to stay clear while he worked to free a dog that was still in the van. He was pulling the man away from the van when it suddenly burst into flames. Hiner kept the man safe until firefighters and law enforcement arrived. He’s been awarded the State Employee Medal of Valor.
