A brother and sister have decided to plead guilty to a Shasta County murder committed over 28 years ago. 19-year-old Frank McAlister was robbed and murdered in 1993. He had gotten an insurance settlement from a car crash and was going to use it to buy drugs. Instead, he was driven to a remote location near Shingletown and stabbed multiple times in the head and chest. His body was left there and his blood-stained car was abandoned in the Costco parking lot. McAlister’s remains were found by hikers about a year later. The case remained unsolved until January of 2018, when 48-year-old Brian Hawkins requested an interview with KRCR TV, saying his faith in god led him to do the right thing. He said living with the secret had been “absolutely horrible” and he said he wanted people to know he was remorseful. After the interview, Hawkins went to the Redding Police Department to confess. He also fingered two accomplices, 49-year-old Curtis Culver and 46-year-old Shanna Culver. She was only 17 at the time so she had to go through juvenile court proceedings before the case could proceed. In 2019 Hawkins pled guilty to first degree murder, robbery and special allegations. He’ll be sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison. On Friday the Culvers both pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter, robbery and assault. Curtis faces up to 35 years and Shanna faces up to 20 years.
