A Shasta Lake City man is accused of lighting his mother on fire. At 8:30AM Friday morning 67-year-old Debra Mangan called 9-1-1 from her home on Shasta Dam Boulevard about halfway between Lake Boulevard and the railroad tracks. She and her son, 27-year-old Nicholas Mangan, had been arguing all morning until Nicholas reportedly poured lighter fluid onto her head and lit her on fire. She was able to extinguish the flames and then ran outside and called 9-1-1. While she was outside with neighbors waiting for help to arrive, Nicholas came out of the house and laid down on the street until deputies got there, when he stood up and put his hands in the air. Debra suffered serious burns to her scalp, head, ears and neck and was taken to a local hospital, likely to be transferred to a burn center. Nicholas was booked into jail for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, mayhem and arson causing great bodily injury.
