Tragedy struck what was supposed to be a joyful celebration in Corning Saturday night. A little before 11 O’clock a stabbing was reported at a party on Ohio Avenue. It turned out out be a Quinceanera, which is a traditional Hispanic coming-of-age ceremony for a 15-year-old girl. Arriving Tehama County Deputies, Corning Police and CHP Officers found about 200 people at the location, many of whom fled upon seeing the police. Two victims were found. 14-year-old Efrain Vargas Jr was stabbed in the torso and later died. A 15-year-old boy was stabbed twice in the back, and he’s listed in stable condition at last word. Witnesses and video evidence led to the arrest of a 17-year-old boy on West Street in Corning.
