An expanded Rodeo Week gets underway Friday with some major events that used to take place on weekdays. Buckaroo Flats is the area between the Asphalt Cowboys Clubhouse and the rodeo arena. That’ll be the scene of a real Friday night hootenany. It starts with the chili cookoff, with set up at 4:30PM and the tasting and judging at 6 O’clock. The quick draw competition is at 6PM. Those who want to participate need to bring their own 357 or 38 caliber revolver in a holster, but without ammunition. Blanks will be provided by the cowboys. The street dance starts at 7 O’clock with the band “Double Crossed”. Those who need some help with their boot scootin’ can take a free line dance lesson at 6 O’clock. All of these events are free. Next week comes the special kids day, the bank robbery, the kiddie pet parade and of course the famous pancake breakfast downtown. The Asphalt Cowboys are still seeking entries for the parade next Saturday in Downtown Redding. The Rodeo Parade has been a part of rodeo week since 1949 and there’s no entry fee. This year’s theme is “Honky Tonk Bars and Rodeo Stars”. An entry form, and a schedule of all the Rodeo Week events, can be found at asphaltcowboys.org. The rodeo itself starts Wednesday with “Extreme Bulls and Barrels”, with traditional rodeo events on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Rodeo Association hosts a steak feed this Saturday from 5PM to 10PM at the Rodeo arena, and a rodeo clinic for women called “Chicks and Chaps” next Friday from 10AM to 2PM. Tickets and details are at reddingrodeo.com.
