Crews have cleared the highway through Lassen Volcanic National Park, and it opens for the season Friday. According to the Park Service the work was much easier than most years because of the lower-than-average snowpack. The 30 miles park highway may still be subject to intermittent closures for repairs. The road to Butte Lake is open but the roads to Warner Valley and Juniper Lake remain closed due to hazards left from the Dixie Fire. The footprint of that devastating fire covers 69% of the park, though prior fuel reduction projects helped limit the severity of the damage. Manzanita Lake, Lassen Peak and Sulpher Works are unaffected by fire damage. Visitors can check for specific closures online at nps.gov/lavo.
