A heroic Trinity County dog that defended her owner against a Mountain Lion has died unexpectedly. On May 19th, Erin Wilson stopped off Highway 299 at the White’s Bar Picnic Area near Big Bar to take her dog Eva for a walk. The 2-and-a-half-year-old Belgian Malinois was on the path a little bit ahead of Wilson when the Mountain Lion swiped across Wilson’s left shoulder, scratching her. She screamed and Eva ran back and threw herself at the lion. The lion bit the dog’s head and would not let go as Wilson threw rocks, tried to tug them apart and even tried to gouge the lion’s eyes. She ran back to the road and flagged down another woman who had a can of pepper spray, which they sprayed in the lion’s face. The lion was still trying to drag Vva into the bushes until they used a piece of PVC pipe and hit the lion with it until it let go and ran away. Eva had two skull fractures, a punctured sinus cavity and severe swelling. Wilson posted a GoFundMe campaign to pay for vet bills and it brought in more than $30,000. Wilson took Eva home and she seemed to be making a great recovery, but there were complications with brain swelling and on Wednesday Erin’s heroine passed away.
