A major change has come to the Henderson Open Space, and not just the name. The area on the east side of the Sacramento River south of the Cypress Bridge is now known as the Nur Pon Open Space, in a tribute to the Wintu people who first occupied it. A major cleanup began Monday, and it won’t end until it’s a city park with regular police patrols where people feel safe taking their families. Redding Police spent the last couple of weeks telling the homeless residents they need to leave, with community groups offering alternative housing and resources. Eleven of the campers accepted assistance. On Monday nobody was cited or arrested, but six 30 yard dumpsters full of trash and debris was hauled away by a city, county and volunteer work crew. The area is fenced off and will remain closed until the rehabilitation is complete at an undetermined future date.
