Branstetter Fire Sparked By Illegal Cooking Fire In Homeless Camp

A fire that started in South Redding at around Noon Thursday burned 33 acres before forward progress was stopped at around 2:30PM by Redding Fire Department with assistance from Cal-Fire. The area that burned is located south of Branstetter Lane along Olney Creek and to the southwest of there, in mostly undeveloped land covered in Oak Trees and Manzanita Bushes. Apparently no structures were lost. Investigators say the fire was caused by an illegal cooking fire that was left unattended in a homeless camp. Firefighters were mopping up well into the night and will continue to keep an eye out for hot spots.
