Competency Hearing Date Set For Man Accused Of Fatally Stabbing Taco Bell Employee

A man accused in the stabbing death of a fast food restaurant employee in Downtown Redding had a court appearance Wednesday. 55-year-old Brent Ray Close is charged with the March 28th murder of 29-year-old Kevin Wrenne, who was outside taking a 10 minute break from his job at the Taco Bell on Market Street when he was stabbed multiple times. Close, a local homeless man known well by police from his lengthy prior criminal record, was found a few days after the murder. He’s also been implicated in the non-fatal stabbing of a man last October near the Rodeo Grounds. There’s no known motive for the killing of Wrenne. In July Close was alleged to be mentally incompetent by his attorney. The judge appointed two doctors to evaluate close’s mental state. During an appearance Wednesday competency hearing was set for December 6th.
